Mr. Sun served as Managing General Partner and CEO of Venrock Associates from 1997 until his retirement in 2010, having joined the firm in 1979 as a general partner. Over his career at Venrock, he invested in and advised more than 60 high-tech startups, contributing to over two dozen successful IPOs and mergers or acquisitions. In 2000, he founded GGV Capital, a $1 billion China-focused venture fund.
Mr. Sun played a key role in the evolution of information technology, from early semiconductor manufacturing and PC hardware/software to telecommunications innovations and the rise of the Internet. He was recognized on Forbes’ Midas List, reaching the top ten in 2002, and was an active board member of the National Venture Capital Association.
Mr. Sun has been deeply involved in educational and international communities. He served on the board of MIT, including on visiting committees for Electrical Engineering and Material Science, and on boards for the MIT Center for International Studies, the Harvard China Fund, and the Singapore University of Technology and Design—an MIT-Singapore collaboration. He is also a member of the Committee of 100, which focuses on U.S.-China relations. Additionally, he advised the U.S. Navy on venture capital matters and served on the Government of Singapore’s International Resource Panel. Mr. Sun is Chairman of the Board of Directors at Cognex Corporation and serves on the boards of CM Capital and several other public and private companies. He holds a B.S. and M.S. in Engineering from MIT and an MBA from Harvard University.
